Callistemon viminalis

Weeping Bottlebrush

Character: Evergreen; oval form with weeping limbs; light canopy.
Size: Medium (Height: 25-35'; Spread: 15').
Growth: Moderate.
Foliage: Light green, narrow leaves, 3-6" long.
Flower: Bright red flower clusters, 3-4" long, in characteristic "bottlebrush" shape, bloom throughout the year, especially May-July.
Fruit: Small brown seed capsules, form year-round and hang from branches like strings of beads.
Bark: Rough light gray bark.
Monthly Watering Needs: In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
Tree Care: Low. Early pruning will train a good shape; regular pruning needed less frequently with age.
Tolerances: Drought (once established), any soil. Sun or shade.
Special Considerations: Does not tolerate strong winds, fog, or salt air. Dropped flower parts leave sticky nectar. Needs extra water in sandy soils.
Notable Traits: Native to Australia. Excellent tree for narrow sidewalks; 2x3' basins; beneath overhead wires. Flowers attract hummingbirds. More upright form than Callistemon citrinus.
