Why your investment in

SF's urban forest matters

For over 30 years, Friends of the Urban Forest has harnessed the vision, labor and support of people who know that thriving neighborhoods depend on a thriving urban forest. In this video you'll meet some of those amazing people -- including our founders, volunteers and a U.S. senator -- and find out what motivates them.

The bad news:

  • San Francisco has a combination of challenging natural conditions and prohibitive regulations that make it hard to create and maintain a thriving urban forest.
  • That’s why San Francisco lags behind most major U.S. cities in tree canopy coverage!
  • The city has essentially stopped planting trees as part of its services. San Francisco is not even planting enough street trees to replace those lost to natural mortality, vandalism and other causes.

The good news:

  • Over 30 years at FUF, supporters like you have made it possible to plant more than 45,000 trees during more than 1,000 community planting days across the city.
  • In 2011 alone, FUF planted almost 1,200 trees across San Francisco, an increase of almost 10% over the previous year and our third consecutive year of increased tree-planting!
  • We also made critical tree care visits to almost 4,000 trees.
  • And we grew our Sidewalk Garden program, replacing over 3,000 square feet of ugly concrete with beautiful gardens.

How YOU can help:

  • Your contribution helps cover the costs of the trees we plant. San Francisco's challenging natural conditions and prohibitive regulations make it hard to create and maintain a thriving urban forest.
  • Make a donation today to help us continue to increase the number of trees we plant!
  • You can even make a donation to have a tree planted in honor or memory of someone you know.
  • Last fiscal year, an impressive 84% of our budget was spent on programs. View our annual report.
  • You can improve the way San Francisco looks and feels….
